Carl Duke did not quite emulate the scoring orgy by Jack Doherty at last year’s event on The Rothschild Course at Mentmore but non the less put together two excellent rounds to finish on 11 under par and win by two shots.
The first day on The Rothschild saw the course bathed in sunshine with light winds and all was set fair for a low scoring day. Two scores of seven under par 65 by Ryan Massetti and David Ginn sat on top of the leader board with Challenge Tour player Dan Brooks again featuring on 6 under close behind. With Brooks on 6 under was James Scade trying to blot the memory of last weeks collapse from his mind.
A large group of players finished under par to form the chasing pack including Tom Dolan who saw a lot of hard work and steady improvement over the last few years pay off with an excellent 4 under par 68.
The second day was just as warm but a strong breeze would make scoring difficult and patience would be the key to un-lock a victory. Neil Reilly surged through the field scoring a brilliant 64 to set an impressive early target of 8 under par 136 for the others to chase. Carl Duke was having a birdie fest on the links scoring no less than 9 in all with just two bogeys spoiling an otherwise great card. Duke said that everything was moving on his last two putts for birdie except the ball but both efforts found the bottom of the cup and Duke assumed the lead with an impressive total of 11 under par 133.
On the golf course James Scade was holding things together recovering from two early bogeys and was chasing the new clubhouse leader Duke. After a stuttering front nine of 37, one over par, Scade proved that he has the game by recovering and gathering 4 birdies to come home in 32 for a 3 under par 69 but it was just not enough and he had to settle for a second place total of 9 under par 135 and a cheque for £2,000.
Neil Reilly’s superb 64 left him on his own in third place and a cheque for £1,500 but it was Carl Duke who took the first prize of £4,000 and registered his first win on The Jamega Tour.
