Groves is Pleased as Punch
Luke Groves, Red Golf Management, secured his first significant professional win with a knock-out performance at Aldwickbury Park, which produced a fine 10 under par total and a 2-shot win over a quality field.
Former Coventry City footballer, Liam Robinson who turned to professional golf after fracturing his femur, established himself as the first-round leader with a solid 5 under par 66 to take a one-shot lead over, Luke Groves, Tommy Dolan, both Red Golf Management and the former Somerset amateur, now a professional, Ali Balcombe.
Like most weeks, there were a host of players stacked up behind the leaders, who would be waiting for any sign of a slip-up from the leading groups, in order to pounce and become dream wreckers!
With the players using the knowledge of the course they gained on the first day, scores improved substantially on the final day and the clubhouse target of 4 under par,(70+68), was set by Matt Mumford who after setting the course on fire with an outward 5 under par 31, rather stumbled to a 2 over par back nine.
The ever-present Jamie Abbott came roaring in with a 5 under par 66, which added to his first round 68 set a new clubhouse low of 8 under the card but with the leaders still to come in it would be a long wait for Abbott to see if he was going to be in the final shake-up.
Last weeks winner, Scott Fallon, was well on the way to completing the double with a 4 under par front nine to reach 7 under but fell away badly on the home stretch to finish 2 under par for the tournament.
Young Somerset professional, Ali Balcombe put in a fine performance ending his first Jamega event on 5 under and a top ten finish against a strong field.
As the dust of the day settled, with the final group in, it was an excellent 6 under par 65 from Luke Groves that finally won the day, with a 10 under par total and a 2-shot win over Abbott and 3 better than overnight leader Robinson.
As always, the hospitality on offer at Aldwickbury Park was second to none and the course was presented in pristine condition by course manager Craig Betts and his team, with greens as pure as the driven snow.
