Laskey Makes His Mark

Mark Laskey with Jamega at Essendon Golf Club 2018Mark Laskey won The Essendon Challenge after a three-way play-off against last weeks winner Luke Groves and Luke Joy after overnight leader Michael Watson could not replicate his first-round heroics.

The scoring was outrageous on the first day at Essendon (Old), with Luke Joy, (Remedy Oak), setting an early pace with a 7 under par 65, which included 9 Birdies, that we thought may be equaled but probably no bettered.

Wrong……. Michael Watson, (Wessex Golf Centre), snatched the leaders Yellow Jersey from Joy’s grasp with an absolutely brilliant 10 under par 62 that included 8 Birdies and an Eagle. His playing partner David Dixon said that “It was one of the easiest 62’s you’ll ever see.”

With a comfortable 3 shot lead over Joy and a 5 shot lead over Jack Charman, Mark Laskey, Daniel Owen (Cumberwell Park), Ollie Roberts and Josh Loughrey, Watson was in a commanding position but, as we all know it ain’t over till the “Fat Lady Sings”, in this game.

On the second day several players made big improvements on their first-round scores including recent winner Dale Whitnell (71+66) but his total of 7 under would probably fall short this time.

Kevin Esteve added a 4 under par 68 to his first round 69 to join Whitnell in the clubhouse lead on 7 under par.

Last weeks winner Luke Groves, barges in with a great score of 7 under par, with the back nine containing 3 Eagles, giving him a final total of 10 under par which, by coincidence, was his winning total last week, so, who knows?

Mark Laskey cards a second 5 under par 67 and joins Groves on 10 under par score and neither player was going to be moving very far in case there was a play-off.

In the last group it was Luke joy who carded a flawless 3 under par 69 to his 65 and so joined the Groves and Laskey for the sudden death play-off, from of which emerged the winner, Mark Laskey.

Essendon is the total experience for any golfer looking to play either of the two excellent courses and experience the excellent food and convivial hospitality in the clubhouse, after the round.
