Gandy Races to Ascot Cup Win [UPDATED - GALLERY ADDED]

Tom Gandy with Jamega at Royal Ascot 2019Tom Gandy won The Royal Ascot Cup after a play-off with Jamie Moul when both players dead heated on 8 under par for the two rounds.

With two great days of weather forecast for the tournament at Royal Ascot, we were looking forward to some excellent scoring from the one hundred plus field.

In the first round, Gandy scored an impressive 6 under par 64 over the strict par 70 Royal Ascot layout, set in Berkshire close to Royal Ascot racecourse.

Sam Cutting, Gian-Marco Petrozzi and Jamie Dick kept Gandy at close quarters with 5 under par 65’s, so the battle for the title was certain to be closely fought over the second day.

One of the highlights of the second day, was a hole-in-one by Matt Mumford on the par 3 sixth hole but it was not quite good enough to elevate Mumford into the prize fund.

Jamie Moul, who shot a 4 under par 66 in the first round, could have buttoned up the win in normal time but bogies on the Sixteenth and Seventeenth dropped him back to 7 under par and only a birdie on the last put him into the clubhouse with a lead of one shot over Dale Whitnell and Max Penney.

Gandy, the leader after round one and playing in the last group, also compiled an 8 under par total, adding a 2 under par 68 to his first-round score of 64 and so it was off to a play-off to decide the winner.

In the blink of an eye it was decided at the first extra hole with Gandy running out the winner of his first professional tournament.

Gandy was more than happy to receive his cheque for £3,500 from Club Captain, Martin Davis and course manager Ian Hockley.

The course was in excellent condition thanks to the hard work of course manager, Ian Hockley and his dedicated team and as usual the hospitality shown to all of us and the players in the clubhouse was brilliant and we would un-reservedly recommend it as a, “must play”, stop on your golfing travels.
