Extra Time Win for King
Gary King won a sudden death play-off against Dale Whitnell to triumph in the Mill Ride Classic yesterday, after both players finished tied on 5 under par.
Although the first day at Mill Ride golf club in Ascot was somewhat of a damp affair, to say the least, three players made the best of the very wet and miserable conditions to hold the joint lead on 2 under par.
Jack Charman, Liam Robinson and Gary King headed some seven players who finished on one under par, who in turn had four players on level par chasing them.
Play was eventually abandoned, due to the heavy relentless rain in the afternoon and the plan was to complete the first round early the next day and then, hopefully, have a shotgun start to get the tournament finished.
On the second day, the shotgun start began at 10-30 and the leading three players kept each other at close quarters throughout the day, with Jack Charman covering his first 9 holes in 33, giving him a 4 shot lead over King and a 3 shot lead over Robinson.
Dale Whitnell was making a charge covering his first nine in 32 shots to make up ground and was level with Charman.
Over the second nine holes experience came into play and as Charman began to falter during the last five holes, Whitnell and King began to forge ahead, although Whitnell did have a stumble, with a double bogey on the thirteenth.
King had a stellar last nine, with 5 birdies and a single bogey, seeing him home in 32 shots for his final total, whereas Whitnell was far more pedestrian completing his back nine in level par.
And so, the pair were tied and on they went for the play-off, which was quickly decide by a chip and putt birdie by King to secure the win and the £3,500 first prize cheque.
Even in the appalling conditions Mill Ride was presented in great condition by Drew Ramsey and his team, plus many loyal volunteers from the club members.
Head professional, Terry Wild and the clubhouse staff ensured that we were well looked after and in better weather conditions it is a great place to spend a day playing golf and enjoying yourselves.
