“Chicken Dinner” for Charman
Jack Charman thoroughly deserved his, “Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner”, when he finally made the breakthrough that he had yearned for since turning pro two years ago.
Charman, a qualified chef, was victorious at The Weybrook Park Trophy, with a birdie at the final hole, to win by a single shot from first round leader Jake Ayres.
Jake Ayers led after the first round, with a solid 6 under par 65 with Jack Charman on 5 under par, tucked in close behind.
Three players on 2 under par, James Rooney, newly turned pro Tom Spreadborough and the Amateur, Danny Goddard, were ready to give chase on second day.
The weather had been set fair for the first day but with thunderstorms and heavy rain forecast for the second day it would be in the lap of the gods as too how the day would unfold.
It actually developed into a titanic battle between Charman and Ayres, with no quarter asked for, or given, as the pair exchanged birdies throughout the final round.
Earlier in the day two players, Patrick Ruff and Cameron Phillips, carded 7 under par 64’s which lifted Phillips into the prize fund but Ruff’s first round of 9 over par left him too much to do.
Charman threw down the gauntlet, with an opening nine holes of 3 under par 33, to establish a slender one-shot lead over Ayres but with the back nine to come, which one would hold their nerve?
Charman increased his lead with a birdie on the thirteenth to go two in front but then Ayres hit back with a trio of birdies to re-take the lead by one shot, with two holes left to play.
The Seventeenth proved expensive for Ayres, when he carded a bogey to slip back into a tie with Charman on 9 under par, with just the par 5 Eighteenth left to play.
A clinical birdie putt from 8 feet by Charman, saw the Wiltshire man home by a single shot and afterwards he said how delighted he was to finally clinch his first win as a professional.
Weybrook Park proved to be excellent hosts, with the course in great condition, thanks to course manager ……. and his team of green keepers, with their work being complimented in the clubhouse by the hospitality shown to us and all the players.
