Dan is “The Wizard from AUS”
Australian, Daniel Gaunt (Burhill GC) came out of the darkness and into the light with a tremendous win at Donnington Grove scoring a total of 10 under par, to win by 3 from the Wiltshire trio of Steve Surry (Cumberwell Park), Ben Amor (Jenahura) and Jack Charman (North Wilts GC).
Gaunt, who kept falling in and out of love with the game over the last few years, has now confirmed how good he really is with this win and he will surely, now go on to bigger and better things in the future.
The first days play at Donnington Grove produced some great scoring, with first Billy Watson (Northants GC), carding a flawless 7 under par 65, only to be followed soon after, by the eventual winner Gaunt, who produced the same score, highlight of which, was an Eagle 2 on the par 4 fourteenth.
Tucked in behind the leading pair on 5 under par, were three of Wiltshire’s finest, Ben Amor, Jack Charman and Steve Surry, who with their local knowledge of the course were sure to give the leaders a run for their money.
The second day saw Amor take the lead by one after a front nine of 3 under par, while first round leaders, Gaunt and Watson, went through nine in a rather pedestrian level par.
Starting the back nine with 2 pars, Gaunt then picked up the pace and birdied the next 3 holes to go to 10 under par and into the lead once again.
Amor’s bubble eventually burst with bogeys on the twelfth and fourteenth and neither Surry or Charman could make inroads into Gaunt’s steady play over the last 4 holes and he eventually ran out an easy winner.
It was a pleasure to return to Donnington Grove, after a break of several years, to find the course in fantastic condition and with the clubhouse hospitality as welcoming as ever to all of us and the players providing excellent food and beverages.
